Boys from grade levels participated last week in summer baseball and t-ball camps. The camps were held by Coach Robert Bell of Kenedy and were part of Kenedy’s Summer Recreation Program. The camps were provided free of charge for students attending school in Kenedy or students whose parents pay taxes in Kenedy ISD. The summer program was created by Larry Kiesling and is offered by the City of Kenedy and 4-B Corporation. Its goal is to provide opportunities for local students to attend high quality athletic camps that can normally be very expensive.
The program is in the final two weeks of activities. Football camps are being offered during the week of July 18-24 at the Kenedy High School Football Field. A camp for boys in grades 6-8 will be held from 8:00am-10:00am while the camp for boys in grades 3-5 will be from 10:00am-12:00 noon. Lin Havron, Kenedy’s head football coach and athletic director, will be conducting the camps and is encouraging up and coming athletes to participate.
Girls softball camps will conclude their last week of instruction with Coach Rudy Diaz. Coach Diaz who was just named a Coach of the Year for his work at St. Joseph’s High School in Victoria, will hold the final softball camp for girls in grades 3-5 on Friday, July 22 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. On Saturday, July 23 girls in grades 6-8 will have a camp from 9:00am -12:00 noon and girls in grades 9-12 will have their camp from 1:00pm- 4:00pm.
Starting on July 25th and running until July 29, will be the girls volleyball camps. Calvin Mumphord of St. Joseph’s High School in Victoria will be coaching the camps as he has for the past two years. The volleyball camps will be held at Kenedy Middle School Gym. Girls in grades 6-8 will be instructed from 8:00am - 12:00 noon; girls in grades 9-12 will be from 1:00pm - 4:00pm.
The recreation program’s activities are a great way for future and present athletes to sharpen critical sports skills, and Volleyball and Football camps are taking place at just the right time as athletes start preparing for their seasons. Again there is no charge for the camps and participation is encouraged. Students must be registered in the program to attend and registration is ongoing. Due to the nature of the camps, no student will be allowed participate without completion of the required release forms.
