Beeville Fire Chief Donnie Morris reported a rash of grass fires in the north end of the county on Thursday afternoon.

“They started right after 1 p.m. and continued until about 5 p.m.,” he said, as sirens could be heard seemingly non-stop.

The first grass fire occurred on the farm road between Tuleta and the South Texas Children’s Home and started in an equipment yard. The Pettus-Normanna Volunteer Fire Department requested assistance and the BVFD responded and helped extinguish the blaze.

Then a second call came from the north end of Bee County, just inside the Karnes County line. Morris said a large truck had a blowout and the burning tire parts ignited the grass along the roadway, burning inside a pasture. He sent a truck from the Tuleta area to help on that call.

The third fire ignited shortly afterward in Normanna, right off the highway in thick brush. The Normanna firemen called because a trailer home was in jeopardy, Morris said, but the BVFD helped Normanna put it out before it reached the home.

Morris reminded Bee Countians that it’s so hot and dry, “it just takes one little spark.”
