It came down to eight seconds left. If the JV Three Rivers players could punch it in, they could tie it up and have a chance at a two-point conversion for the win. But Sophomore defensive cornerback Mauricio Blanco would not allow it.

Blanco had the game-winning tackle for the JV Badger Football team at the five-yard line as time expired, and the Badgers outlasted Three Rivers 28-22 Thursday to close out the season.

“I just thought, ‘Make the tackle. Don’t miss,’ ” Blanco said.

The JV Badgers finished 3-2 in district and 5-5 overall.

“The defense played good throughout the entire game, and they made a great goal-line stand to ensure the victory,” Coach Bobby Perez, who assists, said.

Freshman Paul Kinney, who also led all rushers, scored three touchdowns as well as two, 2-point conversions. Blanco chipped in another touchdown. Freshman Elias Estrada had some big running plays and blocked well for the running backs, Coach Sean Armstrong noted.

Armstrong added he was pleased with the total team effort shown throughout the season and looks forward to watching these players as they advance in skills.

“Outstanding defensive players were Elias Estrada, Chris Brambila, Robert Morin – who had a huge interception for us in the second quarter – Jacob Janysek, Chayse Leal, Earl Morin and Eric Stewart,” Armstrong said.  “Chasye Leal, Eric Stewart, Ivan Kotzur, Aaron Lopez, and Earl Morin played extremely well on the offensive line.”

Janysek, a Freshman tight end and left guard, credited the team with not making many mistakes.

“We were able to move down the field good,” he said.
