BEEVILLE – The Lady Trojan varsity girls basketball team improved its overall record to 12-5 with two out of three wins since Dec. 13.

The Beeville girls traveled to Orange Grove on Friday, Dec. 16, and racked up an easy 50-36 victory. It was the Lady Trojan defense that led the way.

“Our defense is starting to be more consistent. We’re learning to play together and play as a team,” said Lady Trojan head coach Katina Walker.

Victoria Elizalde led the Beeville scoring with 14 points. Post Randi Maupin added another 10 in the win.

Tuesday night’s home game against the visiting Moody Lady Trojans started out just great for the home team. The Beeville girls were hot in the first quarter and flustered the visitors on defense to lead 20-9.

Moody regrouped and went on a tear in the second period to get back in the ball game. Moody hit for 25 points that stanza, while the Beeville girls added just 12 to their side. Moody took a two-point lead, 34-32, into the halftime break.

Moody outscored the Beeville girls, 35-29, in the second half to capture the win, 69-61.

“This is one of those games you know we should have had. We have to learn that missing any number of free throws can make or break the outcome of the game,” Walker said.

Maupin finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a “double-double” on the night. Elizalde added 13 points and helped on the boards with seven rebounds.

A Tuesday night road contest in El Campo was the final test for the Lady Trojans before taking a break for the holidays.

The Beeville girls got off to a slow start and trailed 20-12 at the end of the first quarter. The deficit grew to as many as 15 before the Lady Trojans turned things around. It was a strong second half performance that reversed the outcome. The Ricebirds led by seven, 28-21, at the half, but the Beeville ladies scored 23 third period points while holding the home team to 11 to edge in front, 44-39.

The El Campo girls fought back, but the Lady Trojans held on for a 58-55 victory.

“We dug ourselves a hole. But the girls stayed together and fought back for the win,” Walker said.

Elizalde scored at will and finished with a season high 30 points and also dished out seven assists. Maupin added 12 points in the win.

The Lady Trojans will compete in the St. Joseph Flyers tournament that runs Dec. 27-28.

The Lady Trojans will face Skidmore there on Dec, 30. Three games will be played that night. The JV girls tip off first and then the alumni from each school will take the floor, followed by the varsity contest.

Any of the former players for either school that want to play in the alumni battle are urged to contact Walker for Beeville or coach Joseph Grimes III for the Lady Cats.
