Almost 20 firemen were at the C.M. “Smitty” Smith Fire Station downtown for a countywide chiefs’ meeting Thursday when the alarm came in and trucks and rescue vehicles were on the scene seconds after the alarm, shortly after 8 p.m., of a house fire at 2201 Midway Drive.

Assistant Chief Bill Burris said firemen from Skidmore, Pettus, Normanna, Pawnee and Blanconia responded to the call.

Two adults and seven children got out of the home quickly, even though the initial report suggested that people might have been trapped inside.

Capehart manager Jerry Ries said the smoke alarm in the residence worked perfectly.

Burris said there was extensive smoke and heat damage to the house and flames were coming out of a back bedroom when he arrived at the scene.
