BEEVILLE – Although the temperatures outside were still pretty warm on Tuesday night, the Trojans, inside Marion B. Horton gym, caught a chill. The Victoria West Warriors scored a 45-35 win.

It was a tough scoring night for the cold-shooting Jones High boys.

“We played really well defensively. We held them to just 45 points and without a field goal the fourth quarter, but, once again, we struggled on the offensive end,” said Trojan head coach Mike Luce.

The Warriors were up by five, 15-10, at the end of the first period and that five-point lead stretched to 11 by the halftime buzzer. The teams went into the locker room with the Warriors out front 25-14.

“We probably had five to six second-chance opportunities at the rim where we caught the ball in the air and followed and missed. Plus, we didn’t shoot well from the field or the free throw line and made some bad decisions with the ball,” Luce said.

The Warriors out-scored the Trojans 11-8 in the third period as the Beeville shooting woes continued. Heading into the final eight minutes, the visitors were out front 36-22 in the low-scoring contest.

The JHS defense was tough over the final quarter; all nine Warrior points came from the foul line. The Trojans hit for 13 in the period, their best effort of the night to pull within 10 at the final buzzer.

“Their coach said to me after the game, ‘You guys are 10 times better than you were last year.’ Encouraging, but it doesn’t get us the win, and that’s the bottom line,” Luce said.

Cody Vasquez had eight points to lead the Trojan scoring. Cameron Kremers and Brent Reyna followed with seven. Hunter Hardy hit for six points, and Brooks Holder, Dakota Del Bosque and Chris Maldonado added two apiece. Darius Thomas made one free throw.

The Trojans hosted Victoria East on Friday night and will travel to Floresville on Tuesday night.
