The Bee County University of Texas Ex-Students chapter is planning to host its annual Texas Independence Day Celebration at the Beeville Country Club on Friday, March 2.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a social, followed at 7:15 p.m. with a catfish dinner.

Cost for the evening will be $35 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Bee County UT Exes scholarship fund.

Speaker for the evening will be Jason Suchomel, editor of Orangebloods.com, which specializes in covering Longhorn sports and recruiting.

In his time with the Bee Texas Exes, he will discuss the long rivalry of the University of Texas and Texas A&M and his interpretation of what A&M’s move to the SEC means to this rivalry.

Suchomel joined Orangebloods.com in March 2002. A graduate of UT-Austin, he earned an undergraduate degree in journalism in 1996. During his time at Texas, Suchomel wrote for the Daily Texan and interned in the sports department for KEYE television, helping in the daily production of the KEYE sportscast.

Following graduation, Suchomel began working as a reporter for a chain of newspapers in Central Texas, first covering the city and police beats before settling in at the sports editors desk of the Bastrop Advertiser. From there, he was hired by First Down Publications as the editor of Horns Illustrated, as well as overseeing the production and layout of the company’s other sports magazines.

Suchomel has covered the Longhorn football team and Longhorn recruiting for more than a decade for both print and electronic publications, and he’s contributed to a number of magazines around the state as a guest columnist. He also appears weekly on radio programs around the state discussing Texas Longhorn athletics.

Area Texas Exes, parents of UT students and friends of the university are encouraged to RSVP to Jon or Laura Fischer, at 361-358-0270 or email fischers@utexas.edu by Feb. 25.
