Although no action was taken related to changing the comp time policy for Karnes County deputies at the March 30 meeting of Commissioners Court, one county commissioner said the policy should be changed.

County Commissioner Carl Hummel, in an interview with The Karnes Countywide Monday said that he feels that local deputies deserve to earn comp time for any hours worked more than 40 per week, and the county can easily afford to make this change in policy.

As it stands now, deputies do not get credit for “time-and-a-half” comp time until after 85.5 hours in a two week pay period. Hummel feels they should get “straight time” comp time hours for any hours worked more than 40 in a given week.

“There is nobody that has the same responsibility, the same duty, the same dedication, that puts their life actually on the line like law enforcement,” Hummel said.

Hummel said he would request for the item to be placed again on the agenda for the meeting sheduled for April 30.
