“Most of the school districts in this region have experienced larger than usual turnover this year,” said district superintendent Jeanette Winn. “So we are very pleased to have these quality and certified professionals join our staff.”
The board formally approved Vanessa Pawelek as the new Karnes City Junior High School principal, and also Anthony Annis as the new vice-principal of Roger E. Sides Elementary.
Pawelek has previous teaching experience at Falls City High School and has spent the last two years as assistant principal and instructional coach at the Floresville Choice Program, which is an academic alternative school that helps students that are struggling academically. Pawelek is going on her tenth year in the education profession, and now brings her experience to her new position as junior high principal.
“I’m very excited to be in Karnes City,” said Pawelek. “It’s close to home and I’ve always heard great things about the Karnes City Badgers. I’ve had family members that have graduated from here, and they’ve always bragged about their school. As far as leadership goes, the middle school age-group is my favorite age-group to work with. I look forward to being a leader on a campus working with students that I value the most.”
Pawelek comes as the second head principal approved by trustees this summer. In June the board approved the hiring of Demetrio Garcia as principal of Roger E. Sides Elementary.
A graduate from Kenedy High School, Garcia was at one time the Assistant Principal and Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Roger E. Sides Elementary from 2003-2006. For the past six years Garcia was a principal for Pawnee ISD, but is now back at KCISD to assume the leadership role of principal of the elementary school.
“I’m back at Roger E. Sides. It was always a dream of mine when I was the assistant there to come back as the principal one day. This is where I started and my roots are here,” said Garcia.
Also in June, new teaching staff to the elementary school were named. The new elementary teachers for the 2012-2013 school year are: Kaylynn Krueger, Tara Jacob, Jacquelyn Cunningham and Vannessa Chandler.
“We hire the best,” Garcia said of the new teachers. “We will do everything we can do to get the best for our kids, which is why they are here. We had a lot of applicants. Our school has a good reputation of being very strong academically, so naturally everyone wants in. After filtering through all the applicants, I am certain that we hired the best for our kids.”
At the meeting the board also unanimously approved the recommendations to hire new KCISD high school teachers Mark Barker (Social Studies and Business Education), Angela Gamez (English), Jeremy Gamez (Science and head boys basketball coach). Also, hired previously in June, was Noel Lopez (Mathematics).
New junior high teachers approved were Genna Kopecki (6th grade science) and Chris Werner (7th grade social studies and coach).
The board also approved of new elementary school music teacher Irene Perez.
In other matters, trustees:
•Accepted the resignation of trustee Trini Gamez. Gamez resigned from the board on good terms in order to allow his son Jeremy Gamez and daughter-in-law Angela Gamez, to be hired by the district as teachers. The district could not legally hire them with Gamez seated as a trustee
•Swore in former elementary school principal Julie Braun as the new trustee to replace the resigned Trini Gamez
•Elected trustee Marisa Beaver as the new board secretary.
