City Secretary Tomas P. Saenz said prospective candidates have until 5 p.m. Monday, March 9, to file for a position on either of the two ballots.
So far, incumbent Ward 1 Councilman Michael Scotten is the only candidate who has filed in that ward. He is completing his first two-year term on the council. Scotten is a self-employed landman. He will be 43 by election day.
Local certified public accountant Libby Hitchock Spires filed minutes earlier than Scotten, the first thing Monday morning, to run in Ward 5.
That seat currently is held by Mayor Kenneth Chesshir who has been on the Cituy Council since 1993.
Candidates do not have to live in the wards in which they file to run for a particular seat. However, only voters who are registered in either Ward 1 or Ward 5 may cast ballots.
Saenz said it is important that anyone who wishes to vote in this year’s elections be registered in one of those wards by April 9. Also, anyone who has moved from another ward to either Ward 1 or Ward 5 needs to have his or her address changed to the new ward by that same date.
Early voting by personal appearance will begin on April 27 and end on May 5. Voters applying for mail-in ballots will be able to do so beginning March 10.
