The freshman girls started things off on Tuesday afternoon and captured two straight wins in their best of three match by the scores of 25-21 and 25-14.
“It was a good start. There’s a lot of improvement that needs to take place, and we’ll definitely be working on those areas,” said S-T coach Joseph Grimes III.
“Our serving was a strong point for us in the match.”
The first game was close as the teams battled back and forth. It was all square at 20-20 late before the S-T girls added a 5-1 spurt to finish off the young Lady Trojans.
Game two was dominated by the play of the S-T girls. The Lady Cats raced to a 14-3 lead and were never really challenged. The Beeville girls did rally late but were too far behind to mount a serious charge. The S-T freshman team includes Whitley Rix, Melanie Martinez, Charli Pellon, Sarah Colle, Amanda House, Amber Gutierrez, Katie Stroman, Alexis Quintero and Jessica Urguizo.
The Beeville freshmen include Kayla Stundridge, Janie Cano, Audrey Carranco, MacKenzie De La Garza, Julissa Ortiz, Amber Garcia, Valerie Perez, Alyssa Rodriguez, Isabella Knapp, Alexis Gonzales, Sierra Jefferson, Gabriella Hyturria and Amanda Garza.
The JV contest went to the visitors two games to one. The first game was really close as both teams played well. Defense was good, serves were good on both sides for most of the match and neither team could make any sizable runs to pull away.
The Lady Trojans did lead early on a short run of points off the serve of MacKenzie Harvey. S-T held a 12-9 lead, but after Harvey was finished, the Lady Trojans were on top 17-12. Margaret Downing controlled the net at times with some good kills and hits.
The Lady Cats did not quit and fought back to tie the game at 19-19 before outscoring the home team 6-3 the rest of the way to capture the first game 25-22.
Game two was even closer as the teams battled evenly. The Lady Trojans used an ace serve by Teresa Olivarez to grab a 24-21 lead late in the game and finished off the Lady Cats for a 25-23 win as the S-T girls rallied to again pull close by game’s end. It was all tied at 1-1 and a deciding third game was needed to determine a winner.
Game three was all Lady Cats as their service game clicked early and they raced to a 14-4 advantage. Naomi Garza, Andrea Leal and Brittany Herrera led the Lady Cats. The S-T girls downed the Lady Trojans 25-9 to capture the match 2-1.
“Our girls are clicking and learning how to work together. I am proud of how they played,” said Lady Trojan JV coach Katina Walker.
The S-T girls will play in Riviera on Friday night and will meet Pettus on Tuesday evening.
The Beeville sub-varsity teams will play West Oso on Tuesday in Corpus Christi and will then compete in the JV and freshman CCISD tournament Aug. 24-25.
