The Skidmore-Tynan Lady Cat varsity basketball team advanced to the regional quarterfinals with a resounding 57-32 win over the George West Lady Longhorns.

It was tight through the first two quarters with neither team getting too much of an advantage. The Lady ‘Horns were up 11-10 after the first eight minutes. The S-T girls fought back and owned a 22-18 lead at halftime. Then came the third quarter.

“The girls did a great job in the third quarter. It all started when we hit a couple of outside shots, which caused them to change their defense to man to man,” said Lady Cat head coach Joseph Grimes III.

The Lady Cats clamped down on defense in that third quarter, allowing the GW girls just two late free throws while scoring 19 points themselves. Going into the final quarter, the Lady Cats were in control at 41-20.

“Against their man to man, we were able to run pick and rolls and create easy shot opportunities for ourselves. On defense, we cut down their second shot opportunities and took away their two best shooters,” Grimes said.

The Lady Horns hit for 12 points in the fourth while the Lady Cats put up 16 to make the final 57-32.

Rachel Mengers led the Lady Cats with 18 points. Devon Wilder followed with 16 and Alexis Schmidt tallied 12. Ashley Scott finished with six points while Courtney Vandever sank three and D’Anne Wilder completed the Lady Cat scoring with two.

“Overall the girls played hard throughout the whole game and took care of their responsibilities,” Grimes said.

The regional quarterfinals had the S-T girls traveling to Port Lavaca to meet the Hitchcock Lady Dawgs on Tuesday night. Hitchcock defeated San Diego on Friday, 65-59.
