The Lady Eagles lost to 4A Moody (3-2) and Beeville (4-1) but, came back to beat 4A Gregory-Portland (4-3) and 5A Carroll (2-1).
“Getting that first win feels really good,” said freshman pitcher Malorie Nesloney. “We feel like our practice is paying off and we are accomplishing something. Beating these bigger schools will give us the confidence we need to be successful this year.”
Like their varsity sisters, the JV Lady Eagles were also playing short-handed with only nine players available. A few of the team members were called up to play with the varsity in Goliad, leaving them in a tight situation as well.
“We really came together as a team out here”, continued Nesloney. “We only had nine girls so it was us and no one else. We had no extra help other than Coach Wollam and our fans. We really had to work together because the high school level of play is so much better and faster. We are looking forward to being at full strength again and getting back out on the field.”
In tournament play, Kasie Fierova had 2-hits, 2-runs, 1-stolen base; Melinda Hernandez, 1-hit, 1-RBI, 2-runs, 2-stolen bases; Nesloney 1-hit, 15-innings pitched, 24-strikeouts; Kitty Avery 1-hit, 2-RBI; Jimah Riemenschneider 1-hit, 1-stolen base; Jennifer Elizardo 1-hit, 2-runs, 2-stolen bases; Trista Yanez 1-hit, 1-RBI, 1-stolen base; Meghan Saunders 2-hits.
