BEEVILLE – The Cougar volleyball program got off to a good start in their own tournament, of sorts, on Friday morning with a win over Victoria College three games to one.

The final three games for the Cougars were all competitive but the visiting squads got the better of the local ladies.

Four other teams from around the area were in Beeville over the weekend to compete and get some valuable floor time early in the season.

Victoria College, Wharton County Junior College, Odessa College and Laredo Community College all joined CBC in the two-day event.

The Cougars started off the competition with a best of five match with Victoria College.

The visitors captured a close first set 25-22, getting the last three points of the contest. Set two was a different story, the Cougars came out fired up and never trailed from 4-3 on to a 25-22 victory. That evened the match at 1-1.

The momentum had changed in the gym and set three was dominated by the Cougars. CBC captured a relatively easy 25-19 win to move in front in the match 2-1.

Set four was close Neither team led by more than most of the way. It was all tied at 20-20 late in the contest. The Cougars prevailed with a final run of 5-1 over Victoria to capture the win at 3-1.

The second game of the day for the Cougars had the ladies up against Laredo Community College. The Palominos got the better of the Cougars in three straight competitive sets – 25-18, 25-20 and 25-19. The overall height and hitting ability of LCC was the difference.

On Saturday, the tough Odessa Wranglers roped the Cougars in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-11 and 25-10. The second set had the Cougars playing right with the Wranglers but Odessa closed it out down the stretch.

The second match on Saturday afternoon had the Cougars playing the Wharton County Junior College Pioneers. The first and third sets were close but the Pioneers dominated play in set two. The first set was a 25-22 win for the Wharton County ladies and the second set they blew by the Cougars 25-11 for a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three was close and went into extra points. The Pioneers got the final two from a 25-25 tie to win the match at 3-0.

The Cougars got good net play from Mykayla Villarreal, Shanise Wilson, Ronnie Garcia and Bailey Cernosek throughout the tournament. Korie Rodriguez, Regan Gonzalez, Ann Atezenhoffer and Kathy Acosta also played well.

The Cougars travel to Western Texas College in Snyder this weekend for matches on both Friday and Saturday. The Cougars will be back in town on Sept. 18 when Wharton again visits Beeville.
