Fire Department Chief Alonzo Morales said the Goliad Volunteer Fire Department has been kept busy the past few weeks with grass and brush fires popping up with more frequency.
Over 300 acres burned earlier this month near State Highway 183 between Goliad and Refugio. Morales said the fire was believed to be caused by a lightning strike.
There was another grass fire along State Highway 183 last week in the same area that caused about a 45-minute closure of the highway.
“The smoke got so thick that we had to shut the highway down,” Morales said.
Goliad County is under a 90-day burn ban that was instituted on Aug. 27.
