BEEVILLE — The Calallen Ladycats took no mercy on the Beeville Lady Trojans on Friday night, sweeping the varsity girls 3-0 in their best of five match-up at Marion B. Horton gymnasium.

Scores of the three sets were 25-12, 25-13 and 25-18.

Calallen played solid along the front line and had hitters galore against the Lady Trojans. The Ladycats took an early 7-2 lead on the hometown girls and pushed that to 17-4 before closing out the set with eight of the next 16 points. The Ladycats served well and played good defense. The Lady Trojans could not keep up defensively with the hard hitting ‘Cats along the net. The taller Calallen girls also came up with a few blocks on defense to score points.

Serving for both sides was spotty in the first set with several points earned by both teams on net serves.

Set two was a replay of the first set with the Calallen girls overpowering the hosts. The score was 8-3 Calallen early in the set and the visitors improved that to hold a 16-8 margin. Calallen took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 9-5 run.

Set three was somewhat closer as the Lady Trojans began to hit with some authority. Brennan Holder, Victoria Elizalde, Emma Downing, Abigail Silva and Ciara Garcia played well along the Beeville front line. Elizalde and Brianna Jackson did most of the sets and worked hard on defense. Serves from Celeste Contreras and Holder found their mark for points for the Beeville squad. Calallen led 10-3, but the Lady Trojans closed the gap to come within three, 15-12, before the visitors outscored them 10-6 down the stretch to get the 25-18 win and a 3-0 victory.

“We got a revved up a little too late in the game. We have to be ready to go from the start,” said head coach Brittainie Zinsmeyer.

“I feel we are there, but we have to tighten up on the little things.”

Elizalde had seven assists on the night and Holder hit for six kills.

The JV girls also lost in two straight sets, 25-18 and 25-10, but JV coach Katina Flournoy saw some improvements on the floor.

“We are moving our feet and talking on the court. These have been key issues we wanted to improve on this week,” Flournoy said.

Jeana Gonzales and Ana Rodriguez had eight digs/saves for JHS.

“We fell a little short tonight,” Flournoy said.

Margaret Downing had three blocks and three kills in the match. Mackenzie Harvey and Rebekah Hinojosa shared with 10 assists in the match.

The freshman match also went just two sets.

“The Lady Trojans gave the Ladycats a hard workout on Friday night. We are getting stronger and tougher,” said freshman coach Don Ledezma.

Audrey Carranco made key serves and kills during each game, and Gabby Hyturria came up with seven assists.

“We are looking better and more together,” said Ledezma.

The Lady Trojans were in Corpus Christi on Tuesday night for a non-district match with 5A Carroll. On Friday night, the Beeville girls will host Port Lavaca in another district showdown. Play gets under way at 5 p.m.
