FALLS CITY – In the midst of rain and storms around the state on Friday night, the Falls City Beavers, after a slight delay, took to the field to face the Three Rivers Bulldogs. With the rain causing the playing surface and the footballs to be slick and slippery throughout the game, the Beavers made the most of the situation. With their balanced offense and their defense containing the Bulldogs’ rushing attack, the Beavers defeated the Bulldogs by the score of 32-14 to improve their regular season record to 3-2. “We handled it pretty well and concentrated on ball security,” said Falls City head coach Steve Marbach. “To be honest, it wasn’t too bad.”

Falls City scored four touchdowns in the first half, two in each quarter. By contrast, Three Rivers had one second quarter touchdown in the first half. Both teams scored one touchdown each in the second half, with the Beavers scoring in the third quarter and the Bulldogs scoring in the fourth quarter. Scoring for the Beavers during the game were Cameron Soto, who threw two touchdown passes and returned a Three Rivers interception for a touchdown, Phillip Lyssy, who caught one of Soto’s touchdown passes and rushed in for one score, Royce Leonhardt, who also caught a touchdown pass from Soto, Austen Camber, who returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and Yoseph Cruz, who went 2 for 4 on extra point attempts on the evening.

Statistically, the Beavers gained 335 yards of total offense, with 178 yards rushing over 27 carries and 157 yards passing over 11 completions. The Bulldogs, by comparison, gained 246 yards of total offense, with 216 yards rushing over 47 attempts and 30 yards passing on one completion Penalty wise, the Beavers committed six penalties for 51 total yards and the Bulldogs were flagged five times for 20 total yards.

This week, the Beavers will have their Bye week. “We’re happy with how we played,” said Marbach. “There are several little things we’ve got to work on but overall we’ll treat like two-a-days in a way. We’ll also get a little rest.”

The Beavers will open District 14-1A Division II play next week as they travel to Pettus to take on the Eagles in a game that Marbach said will be an emotional one. “It’s going to be a challenge for us to match their fire and enthusiasm,” said Marbach. Kickoff in Pettus is set for Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m.
