COTULLA – After taking care of Bloomington at home the week before, the Karnes City Badgers had a tough road test against the Cotulla Cowboys on Friday night. With their strong running game and defense, the Badgers came out of Cotulla with a crucial 19-7 victory to move to 3-0 in District 15-2A Division II action and to 5-1 overall this season.

“I’m very proud of the kids,” said Karnes City head coach Jim Wood. “We’ve got to eliminate penalties, but I’m proud of the kids for not getting their heads down.”

The Badgers scored once in the first three quarters, with the Cowboys only score coming in the second quarter. Scoring for the Badgers were K.D. Glenn, on a 35-yard run, Mauricio Blanco, who caught a 20-yard pass from Dylan Lopez, John Garcia, who made one extra point, and Lopez with a 5-yard run of his own.

Statistically, the Badgers gained 233 yards of total offense, with 165 yards rushing over 38 carries and 68 yards passing over five completions. The Cowboys were held to 133 yards of total offense, with 76 yards rushing over 26 carries and 57 yards passing over two completions. Penalties proved costly for both teams as the Badgers were flagged 11 times for 95 total yards and the Cowboys were flagged nine times for 80 total yards. A key to the Badgers’ victory was turnovers, as the Cowboys lost two fumbles and threw an interception.

“We’ve still got the top teams left in district, but we’re playing hard and physical,” said Wood.

This week, the Badgers will continue their district run and host the Natalia Mustangs.

“They throw the football and spread you out,” said Wood about Natalia. “Defensively, we’ve created turnovers so we need to do that and make sure we take care of the football.”

Kickoff in Karnes City is set for Friday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m.
