REFUGIO — In front of a huge homecoming crowd the Bobcats did what they do best. They totally dominated the football game from start to finish, handing the Taft Greyhounds an 80-0 shutout.

Refugio quarterback Travis Quintanilla broke the statewide record for touchdown passes in a single game by throwing 10 touchdown passes for the night. The previous record was nine, set by Fort Worth Southwest’s Wesley Harris last season.

“We are very proud of Travis and the entire team for such a prestigious accomplishment,” said head coach Jason Herring.

The Bobcats attacked mostly through the air during the game but it would be Chase Whetsel who would score the defending state champs’ only rushing touchdown on the Cats’ first possession. Barging in from 9 yards out, Whetsel put the first 6 points up on what would prove to be a busy scoreboard on this night.

Adolfo Cordero put the icing on the cake with yet another perfect game of extra points. Cordero was 10 for 10 on the night.

Quintanilla then went to the air later in the first quarter targeting Marcus Thompson on a 43-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-0.

In the waning seconds of the first period, Quintanilla hooked up with Whetsel on a 64-yard bomb for another Bobcat score.

Quintanilla would throw three more TD passes in the second quarter. The first to Juan Ramirez for 26 yards, the second to Thompson again for 60 yards and one to Draigon Silvas for 28 yards to make the score 42-0 going into the half.

Quintanilla was 8 for 8 with 297 yards in the first half. The Bobcat defense was also solid in the first half with crushing plays by Jim LaFond, Jake Henderson, and John Wesley Shipp.

Quarterback Quintanilla continued the air assault in the third period with 2 touchdown passes, the first coming on a 7-yard hookup with Juan Ramirez. A two-point conversion pass from Brett Davis to Devon LaFrance would put the score at 50-0. The lead was extended to 57 points on a 14-yard pass to Tyler Castellano going into the final quarter.

The defense got into the act by backing Taft into their own end zone and causing a safety in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to make it 59-0.

Quintanilla capped off his stellar performance with three more touchdown passes in just 7 minutes.

Tyler Castellano caught a second pass for a 37-yard touchdown early in the period. Thompson caught his third TD pass for the night for an 11-yard score, and Juan Ramirez snagged his third of the game for 17 yards to top the score at 80-0.

The Bobcats travel this week to Hebbronville to take on the Longhorns this Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Hebbronville.
