The B team boys took the field in the opener and the Coyote pups struck first with about a minute left in the first period. The 6-0 lead became 14-0 when the Alice boys got the ball back on the first of many Beeville fumbles on the night. The PAT try was good on the short run to make it a 14-0 shutout with most of the second quarter still to play.
The Trojans got right back in the game before the half with a TD drive of their own. Beeville started on the Alice 48 after a short kick and marched down the field with running back Mark Gutierrez doing the heavy work. The speedy halfback made several nice runs in the drive and got the Trojans deep in Coyote country.
Gutierrez went the final 13 yards for the score and with Kyle Villarreal blasting his way through the Coyotes on the PAT try, it was a 14-8 game with just under four minutes left in the first half.
Alice used up the rest of the second quarter on offense, but the Trojan D was strong enough to prevent another first half score. The teams went into the halftime break at 14-8 with the visitors holding the edge.
The Coyotes picked up two more Beeville fumbles in the second half that led to Alice touchdowns. The Trojans had drives going, but the loose balls were being covered by the Coyotes. The visitors scored one TD in each of the second half periods to capture a 26-8 victory.
John Posada, A.J. Gomez, Logan Harvey and Gutierrez also made good stops on defense for the B team.
In the A game, Alice scored on its first possession to take a 6-0 early lead. The Trojans, again, had trouble hanging on to the football. An Alice recovery at the Beeville 40-yard line gave the Coyotes excellent field position that resulted in lighting the scoreboard for the visitors to make it a 14-0 contest with just over a minute left in the half.
The Trojans gave up another TD early in the fourth quarter and with the two-point conversion, the Coyotes owned a 22-0 lead with 6:56 left to play. The Trojan offense stalled as the ball went back to the Coyotes on downs. The Beeville defense prevented any further Alice additions to the scoreboard, but the damage was already done. The Coyotes ran home with a 22-0 victory.
Michael Virata, Steve Barrera and Justin Torres all made good runs for the Trojans. Quarterback Nick Gonzales exhibited a strong passing arm but overthrew his receivers on most of his tosses downfield.
The eighth-grade Moreno Trojans travel to Calallen next Tuesday while the seventh-grade squads will entertain the Wildcats at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
