Voters choose Hancock, Dupnik in local races

KARNES COUNTY – Karnes County voters chose candidates and settled issues during the Nov. 6 general election.

In the race for county attorney, Democrat Herb Hancock won with 2,899 votes (71 percent). Hancock’s opponent, Republican Betty Yarter received 1,184 votes (29 percent).

In the race for county commissioner, precinct 1, Democrat Shelby Dupnik won with 546 votes (51 percent). Dupnik’s opponent, Republican Gary Deskin received 524 votes (49 percent).

Voters approved the $7 million bond for the construction of a new county jail, sheriff’s office and courtroom. 2,428 (69 percent) voted for the bond, while 1,079 (31 percent) voted against the bond issue.

Voters also approved two propositions related to how Karnes City ISD will send funds to other statewide school districts. Proposition 1 passed with 974 (69 percent) voting “for” and 437 (31 percent) voting “against.” Proposition 2 passed with 806 (57 percent) voing “for” and 611 (43 percent) voting “against.”

Judith Zaffirini (DEM) – Karnes: 2,340 (58 percent), Districtwide: 202,933 (67 percent)

Grant Rostig (REP) – Karnes: 1,593 (40 percent), Districtwide: 90,682 (30 percent)

Joseph Morse (LIB) – Karnes: 72 (2 percent), Districtwide: 9,148 (3 percent)

Ruben Hinojosa (DEM) – Karnes: 1,708 (43 percent), Districtwide: 148,930 (61 percent)

Dale Bruggemann (REP) – Karnes: 2,187 (55 percent), Districtwide: 91,466 (37 percent)

Barack Obama/Joe Biden (DEM) – Karnes: 1,324 (32 percent), Statewide: 5,288,118 (41 percent), Nationwide: 62,263,068 (51 percent)

Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan (REP) – Karnes: 2,823 (67 percent), Statewide: 7,531,461 (58 percent), Nationwide: 58,895,290 (48 percent)
