Following a successful year of helping encourage students to read, members of the Black Stallion Literacy Project are hoping to enroll more schools in their unique reading program.

The members bring live horses representing characters in the book, “Little Black a Pony” written by Walter Farley.

That is the simple idea, get them interested in reading and comprehension. That is the goal of the Black Stallion Literacy Project.

Students who are motivated to read – because they are learning to understand and enjoy books – are more motivated to learn.

Volunteers from Star of Texas Arabian Horse Club provide the horses but the project couldn’t happen without the support of sponsors in the community to help cover the cost of the two books each child receives and keeps.

This year’s sponsors: Beeville Rotary Club, Becky Causey, Arroyo Medio Ranch, owned by William and Gail Frank, and Trinity Ranch, owned by Jim and Caryl Devlin.

This year is over but we hope to enroll more schools in 2010 and have already started to raise funds.

Amos Welder Sales has donated four 12-foot stock panels to be raffled off on March 28 at Star Open Horse Show at Bee County Coliseum.
