Jim and Janelle Shepherd of Refugio recently attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for their grandson, Zachary (Zack) Edward Shepherd, in Fort Worth at Westminster Presbyterian Church, the sponsor of Troop 499.

His parents are Joe Dale and Julie Whitney Shepherd. His maternal grandparents, were the late Ed and Lydia Whitney of Portland.

Zack started in scouting as a Tiger Scout in the first grade, and progressed to a Cub Scout and then to Weblos to earn the Arrow of Light.

As a Boy Scout he rose in rank and completed the Twin Arrows leadership training, and has participated in teaching the program four times. He has served 63 months in leadership roles in his troop and has earned 24 merit badges, many more than required.

He was elected into the Order of the Arrow, the Honor Campers’ Society of Scouting, in March 2004, and earned the Brotherhood in Order of the Arrow with his father in October 2006.

In 2005 and 2007 Zack assisted in the leadership of Philmont treks, and has also served on the staff for scout summer camps since 2005. He completed the Aquatics School with honors in 2007 and served on the staff in 2008.

He is the founder and charter member of Venture Crew 499. For his Eagle Scout project he organized and directed the total removal and complete replacement of the surface of a large playground, which took a great deal of planning, managing and time.

Zack is a senior at North Crowley High School where he is an AP scholar and a member of the student council and tennis team. After graduation he plans to attend Okalahoma State University and major in journalism.
