The disciples asked Jesus many questions but one question he never answered was when he would come again. Would it be during their lifetime, or during the next hundred years, or in a couple of thousand years? When?
The Gospel lesson from Luke chapter 21 verses 25-36 states "There will be signs in the sun, the moon and the stars...but stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man." In the 12th chapter of Luke the Bible states that we are to prepare for Christ's return and that requires a constant, life long vigil. We cannot lose sight and interest and be distracted by the world. Luke 21 verse 34 "But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap." We are waiting for the King of Kings, Emmanuel, the protector of the flock to return. What could be more important? Will we recognize Christ if we don't know much about Him? Can you sing the latest pop song and not pray The Lord's Prayer or recite The Apostle's Creed? If you lost your Bible, would you search for it just as you would if you lost your cell phone?
