MMS 8A team Trojan Jordan Cantu lays in an easy basket as his twin brother Justin trails the action. The Cantu twins helped the team to an easy 52-26 victory over the visiting Calallen Wildcat squad.
Seventh-grade A Trojan Dolton Corpus weaves his way around a Calallen defender in Monday night’s game at Moreno Middle School. The game went into double overtime before the visiting Calallen squad emerged with a narrow 40-38 victory.
The Trojan seventh-grade A squad lost in a double-overtime thriller and the B team had a tough time with the Wildcats.
The 7B team Trojans played a tough game against the visiting Wildcats. The boys had a tough game offensively and never could get much going. Joaquin Garza had four points, Jesse Castro and E.J. Valdez each had two apiece and Richard Delgado dropped in a free throw in the 21-9 loss.
The 7A team played well, but so did the Wildcats. It was all tied, 32-32, at the end of regulation to send the tilt into the first overtime. The two teams each scored four points in the first extra period to stay knotted. It was 36-36 at the start of the second three-minute extra period. The Wildcat again scored four points, but the Trojans managed to hit for just two to fall to the visitors 40-38.
Thomas Dang led the Beeville scoring with 14 points. Dolton Corpus hit for 10 points in the close loss. Joesea De La Cruz finished with seven, Raymond Barrientes added three and Bryan Lucio contributed two. Blake Casarez had one point.
“The Achilles heel for the Trojans so far has been our free throw shooting, and we’ve committed too many turnovers,” said coach Ernest Gonzales.
Both the eighth-grade Trojans squads were victorious. The A squad continued its winning ways with a decisive 52-26 victory over the Wildcats.
“The Trojans started out a little rocky as we were short a few players due to injuries, but once we found our rhythm it was all Trojan ball after that,” said coach Ricardo Maldonado.
The Trojans were up 14-4 after one period and it was 27-13 at the half. The MMS boys added 25 second half points to their total while holding the Wildcats to 12. It was a big 52-26 victory for the guys in burnt orange.
Leading the Trojans were the Cantu twins, Justin with 18 and Jordan with 11. Augie Canas added three triples for nine points; James Graham sank six and AJ Gomez and Jacob Castro both added four points.
“Defensive accolades go to Audrick Moorer as well as a few other players who contributed. The team effort is great right now, every player hustling on the court, working together, and when we are on our game we are a difficult team to beat,” Maldonado said.
The 8B team boys defeated Calallen 18-14 to improve to 2-0 on the season and in district play. RJ Gonzales led the way with eight points and Johnathan Carillo tallied four. Alfredo Benavides and Rudy Casarez each scored two. Timothy Rincon and Colton Wright each hit a free throw in the fourth quarter.
“Overall defensively, we were aggressive and all over the court,” said coach Oscar Vasquez.
The MMS Trojans travel to Gregory-Portland on Monday. Games begin at 5 p.m.
