The B teams were a little more successful, sweeping both contests with the Wildcats.
The seventh-grade A game was close, and the Beeville girls could not pull away from the Ladycats. Moreno led 6-4 at the end of the first and just 14-13 at the half.
“Nerves about the first home game are always inevitable, and they almost got the best of the girls during the first half of the game,” said MMS coach Michelle Mertz.
“At halftime, we were able to shake them off and come out in the second half of the game playing better basketball.”
The Lady Trojans got a little breathing room by the end of the third period, out-scoring the visitors 11-6 to take a 25-19 lead. The MMS girls added two more points to their margin of victory in the fourth period to make the final a 36-28 decision.
Raeann Flores has 18 points in the win. Kailey Perez led fourth quarter rally with and finished with 12 points. Kayla Johns added six points for the Lady Trojans. Kaitlyn Pelitire guided the Beeville girls over the second half at point to help pull away from the G-P girls.
The eighth-grade A game was even closer, but the Ladycats pulled out a two-point win in the final couple of minutes in the fourth quarter. The Lady Trojans led at the half 14-13 and entering the final quarter, 23-21, but the G-P girls were always around and playing hard.
Neither team could get more than a two-point lead in the game. It was all tied with time running down in the fourth quarter at 26-26. The Ladycats got a short-jumper to fall to take a 28-26 lead. The Lady Trojans tried to tie and send it into overtime, but the shot refused to fall, and the eighth-grade game went to the visitors, 28-26.
Alyssa Medina scored nine points for the MMS girls. Makayla Martinez, Maricella Gonzales and Michaela Chavarria all contributed four markers. Alyssa Silva hit for three tallies and Jasmine Lopez followed wit two points.
“We played our best defensive game. I was so proud of our girls, I could not have asked them to play any better that what they were doing,” said MMS coach Linda Luna.
The seventh-grade B Lady Trojans captured a 23-15 win over G-P in overtime. It was all tied at 15-15 at the end of regulation, but the Beeeville girls dominated the extra period, scoring all eight of the game’s points to win the tilt.
Virginia Delgado led the scoring attack with 12 points from her post position. Angelica Soliz added four points while Cynthia Cisneros, Lois Downing and Briana Garza all helped with two points in the win. Briana Moreno made good on one free throw to complete the MMS scoring.
“My girls never gave up and continued to play smart basketball until the very end,” said MMS coach Lorayne Chandler.
The eighth-grade B squad won their tilt 19-15 with key points coming from the foul line.
“Key defensive players were Maddie Zambrano, Gabby Aguirre, and Mowdy Sanchez. There are still some things we need to work on with both offensive and defense but these ladies are continuously stepping up their game,” said MMS coach Sonia Cano.
The MMS girls were led in scoring by Emilie Bozant and Asheligh Barrientes with six points. Sarah Delbosque finished with four tallies while Brittany Lucio hit for two markers. Marissa Cisneros added one point in the win.
The Moreno girls will host the Kingsville Lady Brahmas on Thursday, Jan. 10, when they return to the court after the holidays. The games begin at 5 p.m.
