VICTORIA – The Texas Highway Patrol made three traffic stops over the holidays that resulted in seizing 126.80 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $70,052.

The first stop was made on Dec. 22 on U.S. Highway 59 in Jackson County near Edna. Troopers stopped a northbound 2000 Ford Excursion for several traffic violations. While interviewing the driver, the Trooper observed several indicators of criminal activity. A consent to search the vehicles was obtained and the search revealed 15 bundles of marijuana weighing 15.80 pounds were located inside the firewall, according to DPS spokesperson Gerald Bryant. The marijuana has a street value of $8,690.The marijuana was coming from Mission en route to Houston. Jose Elizondo, 40, of Penitas was arrested for third-degree felony possession of a controlled substance.

The second stop was made on Dec. 23 on State Highway 35 in Calhoun County near Port Lavaca. Troopers stopped a northbound 2001 Ford Explorer on a traffic violation. While interviewing the driver, the trooper observed several indicators of criminal activity. A consent to search the vehicles was obtained and the search revealed 26 bundles of marijuana weighing 29.60 pounds. They were located inside a false compartment in the cargo area. The marijuana has a street value of $16,500. The marijuana was coming from Rio Grande City e route to Houston. Feliberto Ovalle III, 33, of San Juan was arrested for third-degree felony possession of a controlled substance.

The third stop was made on Dec. 28 on U.S. Highway 59 in Victoria County near State Highway 185. Troopers stopped a northbound 1999 GMC Sierra pickup for several traffic violations. While interviewing the driver, the trooper observed several indicators of criminal activity. A consent to search the vehicles was obtained and the search revealed 27 bundles of marijuana weighing 81.40 pounds were located inside the gas tank. The marijuana has a street value of $44,862.80. Jaime Nino-Hernandez, 21, of Mission was arrested for second-degree felony possession of a controlled substance.
