Ray wrestlers pin Trojans in close match

BEEVILLE — On Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Trojan varsity boys wrestling team faced off against the W.B. Ray Texans. The Trojans came up short to Ray by a score of 36-33.

The dual meet started at the 126-pound weight class. Trojan Mario Perez started the team off strong with a win by pin in the second period. At 132 pounds, Beeville’s Tristan Longoria would also win, on points this time, 5-1 putting the Trojans in front 9-0.

In the 138- and the 145-pound matches, Trojans Seth Aguirre and Nathaniel Barris both lost by pin falls to their Texan opponents to put Ray in the lead at 12-9.

Cordell Aguirre, at 152 pounds, and Jeremy Ramirez, at 160 pounds, both won their matches by pins to regain the lead for the Trojans, 21-12.

At 170 pounds, Beeville’s Ernesto Gomez won as his foe was disqualified in the third period for locking hands excessively.

The Trojan wrestlers then gave up a forfeit for 182 weight class. Trojan Elijah Green, at 220 pounds, was pinned by his Texan opponent to make the score 27-24. Beeville gave up two forfeits in the weight classes of 285 and 106 to put the Ray boys back in the lead at 36-27. Trojan Rogelio Salazar, at 120 pounds, pinned his opponent in the third period in the last match to bring the Trojans close but not enough to capture the overall win.

The Trojan varsity girls also came up with a loss of 37-6 as the Lady Texans dominated. Danielle Perez won by forfeit to get the Lady Trojans off to a good start. Mandy Maldonado, at 110 pounds, lost by a pin in the first period. Brianna Gobel, at 119 pounds, lost on points to her Ray foe. Amanda Puga, wrestling at 128 pounds, also came up short, losing on points 10-8 in a close match. Heidi Rodriguez was pinned in the second period at 138 pounds.

“The Trojan girls will be working really hard to show a great presence in the upcoming district meets,” said coach Amanda Adame.

The Trojan wrestlers played host to Victoria East and West on Tuesday night.
