SEGUIN — The Trojan varsity soccer guys are getting their feet wet in competition against some tough tourney opponents. The boys were in Seguin over the weekend and although a win was hard to come by, the Trojans gained some valuable playing time.

The first round of the tourney had the Trojans on the field against Leander. The speedy and experienced Lions captured a 6-0 win. Jacob Calderon and Robert Rodriguez played well at midfield for the Trojans, according to head coach Taliesin McCall.

The Trojans played the 5A Austin Akins Eagles in round two. It was a repeat of the first contest, blanked 7-0, but the Eagles played a much rougher style of played and took advantage of the Trojans’ inexperience.

“We learned how to get physical against a bigger team and while we learned the lesson a little late, the take away from this was this team of mostly sophomores learned to mix it up regardless of score or calls,” McCall said.

In the third round, the Trojans met another good squad in Hendrikson. The Trojans hung right with their foes through the first half, but Hendrikson forced the action in the second half to earn a 7-0 win.

“They (Trojans) kept their heads up and finished the game strong against odds and exhaustion, they fought on,” McCall said.

In their final game of the weekend, the Beeville boys took the field against the 5A Bryan Vikings. The Trojans trailed 3-0 at the half, but the Beeville boys got on the scoreboard on a free kick by Marcos Ulloa from about 25 yards out from the goal. Ulloa curved the ball over the defensive wall and past the desperate fingers of the goal keeper to pull the Trojans within two at 3-1. Bryan went on to score two late goals to make the final score a 5-1 win for the Vikings.

“They finished the tournament unbowed and ready for the next game,” McCall said.

The Trojans were scheduled to meet an alumni squad on Friday night and will host Calallen on Tuesday night.
