CORPUS CHRISTI — The National Weather Service office here is recruiting additional storm watchers and rainfall observers.

The free classes will be conducted online.

The office is looking for volunteers to become trained storm spotters — who can learn to identify potentially tornadic storms and other severe weather conditions before they occur.

Although online classes have been available before, this is the first time they will be conducted with a live instructor who will guide students through the one-hour class, according to senior forecaster Jason Runyen.

This year’s classes will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14; 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19; 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21; 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23; 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24; 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26; 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28; 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2; 7 p.m. Sunday, March 3; and 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 5.

Storm spotters, the service says, help to protect the lives and property of citizens of South Texas by relaying critical life-saving information in a timely manner.
