FLORESVILLE — The game was all defense from start to finish with just a flash of offense from both sides in Tuesday night’s district 57-4A soccer opener for the Lady Trojans.

The Jaguars escaped with a late goal in the first half, the only goal of the match, for a 1-0 victory over the Beeville girls.

“We will continue to lose unless we start obtaining a better attitude. We have a large group of seniors who should have learned to be poised we get behind, but, instead, we saw players giving up the ball too easily, and certain players weren’t willing to go all out,” said Lady Trojan head coach Don Ledesma.

Jaguar forward Abby Villanueva was in a one-on-one situation with Beeville keeper Randi Maupin late in the first half. Villanueva had about 20-30 yards to the goal, and Maupin came forward to meet her. The Jaguar got the ball just by the sliding Lady Trojan keeper and put the ball into the back of the net for the match’s lone goal with just 1:03 left to play in the first half.

The Beeville defense of Taylor Castillo, Sydney Wesson, Heather McKinney and others played well to keep the Floresville girls scoreless the second half, but the Lady Trojan offense was virtually nonexistent.

“If someone doesn’t put the team on their shoulders and start finishing our chances, then we can forget about any type of a playoff run. Possession, communication, movement off the ball, intensity, pushing forward and giving a 100 percent is what we should be about this year,” said Ledesma.

“If we fail in any of these categories, we will not be successful, and these are things we have been preaching all year long.”

The Lady Trojans got a chance to redeem themselves a little with a home match on Friday night against the Pleasanton Lady Eagles.
