Zermeno ready to begin new duties as city administrator

GOLIAD – Larry Zermeno didn’t have to move far to begin his new career with the City of Goliad.

Zermeno, who served two years as the city’s finance officer, will remain at City Hall after being promoted to city administrator during the city council’s Feb. 19 meeting. Council unanimously approved the selection of Zermeno, who immediately began adjusting personnel to fill two vacant positions.

“My main priority is staff realignment,” said Zermeno, who had served as interim city administrator since Sereniah Breland handed in her resignation in September. “We want to get staff responsibilities set up. We have a number of initiatives that the city has undertaken that have kind of taken a beating because we’ve been short-staffed.”

Zermeno said the city won’t fill his former position of finance officer, but he has given former utility billing clerk Brenda Moses the title of financial specialist and she will work with a consultant and Zermeno over financial affairs of the city.

“We have a consultant who helped us prepare for the audit and we’re going to engage her maybe once a month,” Zermeno said. “We’ll have her review some of the statements and work with Brenda and, of course, I’ll be here to oversee what’s going on in regards to the finance officer position.”

Zermeno also listed improvements to the city’s water recycling plant as a main priority.

Zermeno is also looking at options to fill the economic development director position left vacant by Bridgette Bise’s resignation in November.

Zermeno, a Goliad native, said he was relieved to be hired and excited to get to work.

“I’m happy to be where I’m at,” Zermeno said. “I’m glad this was settled.”
