GOLIAD – Mayor Jay Harvey said Monday that the results from the U.S. Census Bureau prove that Goliad County is a place where more families are wanting to call home.

On Thursday, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that its July 1, 2012 survey found a 2 percent increase in population in Goliad County.

The county’s population rose to 7,351 from the 7,210 reported from the April 1, 2010 tabulation.

“People are wanting to live in our community,” Harvey said. “They like the town, they like the lifestyle. They see it as a good place to raise kids and and a family. That’s how you grow a community.”

Most counties in the area saw an increase in population.

Victoria County grew by 2.9 percent from 86.793 to 89,269. DeWitt County went from 20,097 to 20,465 (+1.8 percent). Refugio County decreased in population, going from 7,383 to 7.259 (-1.7 percent).
