During its last meeting of the year on April 8, the Refugio County Retired School Personnel installed its new officers for the 2009-2012 year.

They also made plans for the spring district meeting which will be held in Refugio on April 29. Fifteen members attended the installation meeting.

District President Bertha White of Victoria installed the new president, Martha Wallace; Patti Borglund, first vice-president, Dwight Mutschler, second vice-president; Betty Kucera, secretary; and Karen Linebarger, treasurer.

The spring district meeting will be held at Our Lady of Refuge Cafeteria. Representatives from 13 units in the area will come from as far away as Bay City.

During the meeting, the scholarship committee reported that forms have been sent to the three area high schools for graduates interested in pursuing a teaching career. The $500 scholarships will be presented to one graduate from each school.

Current president Anita Barber reported on the State convention she recently attended in Dallas, along with Betty Kucera.

The representatives learned at the meeting that the TRS pension has gone from 113 billion to 70.6 billion. If this trend continues, by 2040 the retiree pension fund will not exist.

The next meeting will be Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. at the Refugio City Hall.
