GOLIAD – Local residents are stepping up to assist with medical expenses for the family of a Goliad junior varsity football player who required brain surgery after an injury sustained during a game Thursday night.

According to Goliad resident Adrian Valdez, $10,000 was raised at the Hunters Ball to go to medical expenses for Diago Gonzalez, who lapsed into a coma after sustaining a hit to his head during a game at Yoakum.

Also, Goliad's T-shirts & More by Liz is selling T-shirts designed by the Gonzalez family for $15 with $10 of each sale going to Gonzalez's medical expenses.

T-shirts will go on sale Thursday with youth sizes large to small and adult sizes small to XXXL.

Orders can be made by calling T-shirts & More by Liz at 645-8575. Order forms will also be available at all Goliad ISD campuses.

Gonzalez remains at Austin's University Medical Center Brackenridge. He regained consciousness Saturday after surgery to remove a blood clot and repair a blood vessel in his brain.
