Intense bidding competition characterized the annual auction held by Gamma Omicron chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International as members met on Nov. 2. Each year the chapter conducts an auction of home baked goods and handcrafted items to raise funds for the book grants and grants-in-aid they award to young women going into the field of education. As members arrived at Kenedy Middle School they were treated to a brunch and seated at tables decorated with a money theme. Play money and coins were scattered over the tables along with auction paddles inscribed with phrases such as “Your husband called. He said to spend a lot.”

President Lana Massengale welcomed members and special guests Amber Green, Sandra Briley, Geniene Harris, Connie Perez, Sharon Newsom and Betty Hill to the meeting. Area 3 Coordinator Hill brought greetings from the Texas State Organization, and invited members to the August 9, 2014 Area Workshop to be held in Port Lavaca. She also presented President Massengale with a red rose, the symbol of the DKG organization.

Jan Anderson provided the morning’s devotional and Pam Kerlick led the pledge to the American flag. Marie Meadows, membership chairman, recognized members with November birthdays. Membership recommendations were read and Gamma Omicron voted to extend membership to the following educators: Vanesa Gatica, Amber Green, Geniene Harrs, Sandra Briley, Gwen Hesseltine, Sandra Yanta, and Mary Rich. The initiation of new members will take place at the Dec. 6 meeting in Beeville. Donna Patton reminded members of the Nov. 5 election and read the 9 propositions that will be on the ballot.

When the business meeting concluded the auction began. Serving as auctioneer was Betty Bleeker, who urged members to keep the bidding high so that the scholarship fund would grow. Members heeded her words and many items were hotly contested. Helping Betty were Erie Head and Sabrina Lewallen who showcased the items that were being bid on. As has been the case for several years now, members were willing to spend freely to purchase Marie Meadows’ homemade puff pastries and the dinner rolls prepared by Falba Jo Roberts. The auction concluded with the raffle drawing for the beautiful lap quilt created by Lana Massengale. The lucky recipient was Jennifer Azopardi. The meeting concluded with the singing of the Delta Kappa Gamma song.

Attending from Beeville were Lana Massengale, Erie Head, Falba Jo Roberts, Marie Meadows, Sharon Lee, Betty Thornton, Catherine Thornton, Betty Bleeker, Doris Kuhnert, Myrtle Lucke, Evelyn Jeanes and Pam Jeanes. Attending from Kenedy and Karnes City were Pam Burge, Pam Kerlick, Jan Anderson, Donna Patton, Irene Perez, Jennifer Azopardi, Frances Eckols, Gretchen Dupnik, Susie Kotara, Sabrina Lewallen and Jennifer Gonzales. The Vision Statement of the Delta Kappa Gamma Organization is “Leading women educators impacting education worldwide” and the 2013-2015 theme of the Texas organization is “Expand the Vision: Educate, Inspire, Encourage.”
