BEEVILLE – The Dec. 9 battle with the visiting Calallen middle school girls basketball teams left the Moreno Middle School Lady Trojans with just one victory out of the four games played.

The 7A Lady Trojans improved their record to 4-1 with a 34-29 victory over the young Ladycats. The Beeville defense led the way.

“I liked the way we played as a team and look to improve offensively in the next game. It was a tough battle and our rough defense that helped the girls pull away with the victory,” said MMS coach Juan Guerrero.

Stephanie Garza led the Beeville scoring with eight points. Desirae Gonzales followed with six tallies. Peyton Knapp, Elaina Guzman, Amanda Puente and Megan McGovern contributed with fine defensive efforts according to coach Guerrero.

It went down to the last second or so in the 8A contest, but the visitors edged the Lady Trojans 34-32 to grab the win.

The scoring was slow over the first two periods but the Lady Trojans owned a one-point advantage at the half.

The Beeville girls led by four heading into the final quarter, but the Calallen offense clicked in the final minutes with 16 markers. The Beeville girls managed to add 10 points to their score, but the Ladycats got the last second shot to fall for a 34-32 victory.

Raeann Flores led the Beeville scoring with 11 points. Saleen Flores and August Evans both contributed six points in the loss.

In the 8B tilt, the Ladycats just eased past the Lady Trojans 17-14 in a defensive battle.

The defense was sharp for the Lady Trojans, and the MMS girls got several open looks at the basket, but the shots failed to drop through the nets.

“It was another super close game. Offensively, we had a lot more shots this game but were unable to convert them into baskets. Lauren Botello and Sadie Salazar came up with a lot of steals on defense with their quickness paying big dividends,” said MMS coach Wendy Dearing.

The 7B contest was much the same as the Beeville defense shined, but the offense lagged behind. The Lady Trojans trailed 16-10 at the half and had trouble getting their shots to fall in the second half. The game was still a six-point affair heading into the final quarter. The Calallen girls won a 25-13 tilt with a fourth quarter offensive spurt.

“Our defense fell short in the fourth quarter. There was some improvement among individual players, but overall we still have much to work on as a team,” said MMS coach Sonia Cano.

Avery Gomez led the Beeville scoring with four points. Valerie Puente added three while Kayla Perales and Christina Tamez each contributed two. Key defensive players included Reva Salazar, Alyssa DelaCruz and Araceli Cavasos.

The MMS girls were at Gregory-Portland on Monday night.
