Lions fall to S.A. Home School 8-7 in spite of Chris Pena’s performance Chris Pena did all he could to give Lions a boost in their first game of the Nixon Tournament, but it wasn’t enough to get past S.A. Home School, as the Lions lost 8-7 in five innings on Friday. Pena had two RBIs on a triple in the second inning, while also pitching three solid innings. The top of the first saw the Lions take an early 2-0 lead on A single by Ray J Garza , scoring Dom Cruz who started off the inning with a walk. The Lions pushed their second run across when Ray J. Garza scored on an RBI single by Andre Martinez . It didn’t take long for S.A. Home School to answer as it scored three runs of its own in the first. The game was tied 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth when S.A. Homeschool pushed across the winning run with one out.

Lions falls 9-5 to Somerset

In the Lions second game of the Nixon Tournament Ray J Garza went 2-2, but Lions still fell to Somerset 9-5 in five innings. The top of the first saw the Lions take an early 3-0 lead. Robby Gutierrez drove in the first run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring Dominic Cruz. Nate De Los Santos followed with a two run single, driving in Jacob Asebedo and Ray J. Garza. Somerset countered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first off of Lions starting pitcher Bryant Tiemann. The Lions would score two more runs in the top of the second inning when Ray J. Garza’s single plated Dominic Cruz and Andre Martinez, Unfortunately for the Lions these would be the last runs to cross the plate on the afternoon and Somerset went on to a 9-5 victory over the Lions.

Lions finish Nixon Tournament with loss

After two grueling games on Friday, the Lions had trouble finding any offense in the finally of the Nixon Tournament Saturday morning against Stockdale. Dominic Cruz had a single and two steals and Ray J. Garza singled in the Lions only run as the Brahmas defeated the Lions 10-1. Starting pitcher Jordan Valdez gave a strong effort in his first outing of the year, but the ball didn’t bounce Kenedy’s way on Saturday. The Lions will begin district play on Tuesday as they travel to Port Aransas.
