According to information from the Karnes County Sheriff’s Office and TxDOT, what is thought to have been an 18-wheeler truck somehow lost a load of crude oil from its tanker trailer at about 6 a.m., Monday, March 10, forcing the closure of significant sections of Farm-to-Market Roads 81 and 1144, as well as adjacent county roads in the area.
The spill affected three miles of FM 81 and six miles of FM 1144. Consequently, FM 81 was closed from FM 1144 to County Road 217 and FM 1144 was closed from FM 81 to County Road 197.
Special hazardous materials (Hazmat) crews were sent from San Antonio to assist with the clean-up.
Monday night, TxDOT sources said that the clean-up efforts were expected to continue through Tuesday mainly due to rain that moved into the area.
Karnes County Sheriff Dwayne Villanueva said deputies have been unable to locate the truck or the driver responsible for the oil spill.
