Or cell phones.
And some of the first IBM personal computers were rolling off assembly lines.
That all changed last week when the Kenedy High School Lions’ 4x100-meter relay team not only finished in first place, but set a new regional track meet record and ending a 32-year-long drought in which no Kenedy Lion has qualified for the state meet.
Kenedy High School alum Mitch Long earned gold medals in the pole vault in both 1981 and 1982 and that was the last time that a Kenedy Lion competed at state in track and field.
But now the 4x100-meter team of Seferino Villarreal, Andre Martinez, Cedric Mejia and Dominic Cruz are headed to the state track and field championships in Austin after placing first at the region meet with a time of 43.68 seconds, beating the region record of 43.83 seconds which was set in 2011. The state meet is set for Saturday, May 10.
Kenedy High School Athletic Director Lin Havron said he was very proud of this team and all the Lions athletes that have made great strides this year.
“Our main goal entering this year was to get every boys team into the playoffs in the same year,” Havron said. “We have accomplished that goal and more. I am proud of these kids. It has been a very rewarding place in which to work. Our staff here is to be commended for their work as well. We have all been here together all five years. We are so excited when we have success.”
The Lions relay team aren’t the only student athletes from Karnes County advancing to state competition this year, however.
