GOLIAD – Following is a preview of the Class 2A boys 3,200-meter race at Friday's and Saturday's UIL State Track and Field Championships at Austin's Mike A. Myers Stadium:

GOLIAD ATHLETE: John Von Dohlen

STARTING TIME: 9 a.m. Friday

FASTEST QUALIFYING TIME: 9 minutes, 41.57 seconds by East Bernard's Wyatt Kieler

STATE RECORD: 8:50.79 by Southlake Carroll's Colby Lowe in 2008

CLASS 2A RECORD: 9:26.04 by Roger Hoelscher of Rosebud-Lott in 1988

PREVIEW: Von Dohlen, who will start in Lane 9, finished third at the Region IV-2A meet, but reached the state meet by having the fastest non-automatic qualifying time of 9:55.08.

Von Dohlen finished behind Kieler and Luling's Ryan Flores at the Region IV-2A meet. Flores had the second-fastest qualifying time of 9:43.05. Kieler was third at last year's state meet in 9:33.33 and Flores was sixth in 9:50.94.

Van Alstyne's Evan McQuirk (9:44.14) ranks third among the qualifiers ahead of Von Dohlen's 9:55.08. Bruceville-Eddy's Kyle Doty (9:58.76) was the only other runner to qualify under 10 minutes.

The rest of the field is Edgewood's Trent Phelps (10:10.19), Bushland's John Singler (10:10.55), Cisco's Jackson Witt (10:13.96) and Centerville's Daniel Reyes (10:23.67).

SYNOPSIS: If Von Dohlen can keep contact with Kieler and Flores, he could bring home a medal.
