Bee County woman accused of scratching child; faces felony charge

Several criminal defendants were indicted on second and third degree and state jail felonies when Bee County Grand Jury members met on April 23.

Among those named in the indictments were:

•Kathy Michelle Clifton on a charge of injury to a child, a third degree felony.

If convicted, the defendant could face as much as 10 years in prison and a fine of as much as $10,000.

According to Bee County Sheriff’s Office investigators, Clifton scratched a child under the age of 14 with her fingernails on Feb. 12.

Bond was $3,000.

•Christobal Torres Cantu on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance, cocaine, less than one gram in a drug-free zone.

The charge is a third degree felony.

BPD officers alleged that Cantu delivered the narcotic on Jan. 15 and that he was within 1,000 feet of the Alta Vista Park, 913 S. Alta Vista St., at the time.

Bond was $5,000.

•Faustino Bernal III on a charge of DWI, a third degree felony.

Highway Patrol Trooper Shawn Stephenson made the arrest on Jan. 11.

The indictment listed three previous DWI convictions on June 6, 2001, and on Oct. 17, 2001, both in Bee County, and another conviction on Aug. 10, 2005, in Live Oak County.

Bond was $5,000.

•James E. Ramirez Jr. on a charge of DWI, a third degree felony.

According to Highway Patrol Trooper Peter Nava, the defendant was caught driving while intoxicated on Dec. 26, 2008.

He had previous DWI convictions on Aug. 4, 1994, in Calhoun County and on April 1, 2004, in Matagorda County.

Bond was $3,000.

•Senaida Ann Esparza on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, one-four grams in a drug-free zone.

The punishment range on the indictment was set at a prison term as much as ten years if she is convicted of the charge.

Deputies alleged that Esparza had the drug on Dec. 31, 2008, and she was within 1,000 feet of the Coastal Bend College Day Care Center at 3800 Charco Road.

Bond was $5,000.

•Randy Campos was named in a two-count indictment with the same charge, possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, less than one gram.

The offense is a state jail felony punishable by as much as two years in a state jail facility and a fine of as much as $10,000.

Deputies claimed that the defendant had the drug on Nov. 21, 2008, and again on Jan. 11, 2009.

Bond was $3,000.

•Rick Reyes on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, less than one gram, a state jail felony.

Police charged him in connection with a Jan. 11 incident.

Bond was $2,500

•Jesse Hernandez Jr., also known as Chuko, on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance, cocaine, less than one gram.

The offense is a state jail felony.

BPD officers charged Hernandez with the offense following a Nov. 21, 2008, incident when he allegedly sold the drug to a confidential informant.

Bond was $3,500.

•Rachel Ann Carabajal, also known as Rachel Waddell, on a charge of forgery of a financial instrument.

The charge is a state jail felony.

She was accused by BPD investigators of having cashed a $150 check on the International Bank of Commerce account of a man on Sept. 10, 2008.

Bond was $2,500.

•Anita S. Garcia was named in a two-count indictment on charges of tampering with a governmental record.

The offense is a state jail felony.

According to state investigators, Garcia filed applications on June 13 and Nov. 12, 2007, for government assistance and each time failed to report the income of a man living in her household.

Bond was $2,000.

•Gregorio Olmedo-Vasquez was named in a three-count indictment on charges of DWI with children under the age of 15 in the vehicle.

Trooper Carlos Martinez arrested the defendant on April 7, 2008, and found three children in the vehicle at the time.

Bond was $2,500.

•Juan E. Bernal Jr. on a charge of DWI with a passenger under the age of 15 in the vehicle.

The charge is a state jail felony.

Highway Patrol Trooper arrested Bernal on the charge on Oct. 18, 2008. He allegedly had a girl under the age of 15 in the vehicle at the time of the arrest.

Bond was $5,000.
