Fire Chief Donnie Morris and his wife, Helen, could not stifle their smiles on a recent Tuesday evening, April 23, when Morris received his award for 65 years of service with the Beeville Volunteer Fire Department. When Morris was elected chief by the department years ago he said he had wanted to be a fireman since the day he arrived in Beeville with his father and the rest of the family. He said the family had stopped at a service station and he looked up to see one of the BVFD’s trucks racing to a fire. At that moment, he decided that being a fireman had to be one of the most exciting jobs in the world. Sixty-five years after joining the BVFD, Morris still takes charge at most fire calls the department answers.
