Twelve of 13 chapters were represented at the District III spring convention of school retirees hosted by the local chapter of the Refugio County Retired School Personnel.

The convention was conducted on April 29 in the cafeteria at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic School. Approximately 98 members attended.

Following the presentation of the colors by Ron Nelson and Art Loya, members of local VFW Post 6290, Dr. Martha Jones of Victoria, district president, presided over the meeting that was called to order at 9:30 a.m.

The Honorable Judge Rene Mascorro welcomed the guests to Refugio with an inspiring and informative message about the long-term effects of teachers on students.

Keynote speaker Aubrey Cherry of El Paso, immediate past president of Texas Retired Teachers Association, encouraged the members to stay in touch with their representatives and senators. Cherry also suggested the group request a cost of living adjustment as well.

President Jones conducted a memorial service for 30 members who passed away in the previous year. The late district president, Rose Castilow of Bay City and Virginia Beck of Refugio were included in this group.

Following a number of break-out sessions the group was entertained by local sixth grade singing sensation Ally Coscetti.

Lunch was served and door prizes were awarded. Twelve of the 13 chapters sent members to this convention. The fall district III convention includes counties from Refugio to Wharton.
