Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church will host a fiesta Sunday, May 18.

David Marez will be one of the entertainment headliners for the day.

Born in Mathis, as a young man Marez was influenced by the likes of Joe Bravo, Little Joe Hernandez, Sonny Ozuna, and Freddie Martinez to name a few. His rhythm and blues influence came from the likes of Al Jarreau, Ray Charles, Luther Vandross, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and other artists.

To many, Marez is known as “La Voz de Oro” and for his emotional songs and believes in performing them as though he is personally experiencing the emotions the songs reflect.

He states, “As a singer, it’s good to be an entertainer, but you should never abandon what you’re doing. In other words, don’t let the showman take away from the interpretation.”

“I let the song come first and the rest second, because the mind and energy shouldn’t split. One should put all heart and soul into each song.”

Marez began his musical history in the 70s in neighborhood garage bands.

In the 1980s, he competed in Festival OTI and came in second place. He then reformed “People” and, in 1989, at the Tejano Music Awards won Album of the Year for “Sold Out”, Song of the Year for “Fijate”, and Male Vocalist of the year.

In 1990 and 1993, he won Male Vocalist of the year from the Tejano Music Awards.

His 2004 album Bringin it Back was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2005 Tejano Music Awards.

In 2006, Marez received a grammy nomination, and on Nov. 11, he was inducted into the 2006 Tejano Hall of Fame.

Marez will be performing at OLV’s fiesta from 5 to 7 p.m.

A queen crowning will be held at the 11:30 a.m. Mass. Brisket plates with all the trimmings will be sold from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $7 per plate (drive-thru available), and a raffle drawing will be held at 7 p.m. First prize is a $150 gift card.

Inside the bingo hall there will be live music including mariachi and Ballet Folklorico, sweet shop and religious store and a silent auction from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Outside music with David Marez, Luz Garza y Su Conjunto and Indomable will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and come and enjoy fun, food and games for adults and children alike.
