KARNES COUNTY – Sixteen athletes from Karnes County competed with honor at the state track and field championships in Austin on Friday and Saturday, many of them returning home with gold medals.

Local athletes brought home gold medals in five events.

Falls City’s Justin Twine won gold in three events taking top honors in the long jump, the 4x200 Meter Relay and the 4x400 Meter Relay. Twine also placed 4th in the 100 Meter Dash.

Falls City’s Joseph Swierc also won gold in three events – the 400 Meter Dash, the 4x200 Meter Relay and the 4x400 Meter Relay.

Twine and Swierc were joined on the medal stand by 4x200 Meter Relay teammates Connor Dziuk and Matthew Stulting.

Twine, Swierc, Stulting and Austen Camber earned gold in the 4x400 Meter Relay.

Karnes City’s Paul Kinney won gold in the 400 Meter Dash and placed 9th in the 200 Meter Dash.

Falls City’s Hannah Lyssy placed 4th in pole vault as well as placing 7th as part of the 4x200 Meter Relay team with teammates Kaelen Cheatham, Alyssa Dziuk and Haleigh Blocker.

The Falls City girls 4x400 Meter Relay team of Cheatham, Dziuk, Blocker and Sara Moore placed 4th.

The Kenedy boys 4x100 Meter Relay team of Seferino Villarreal, Andre Martinez, Cedric Mejia and Dominic Cruz placed 7th at the state meet.

Falls City’s Tyler Malcolm placed 8th in the pole vault.
