BEEVILLE – The Trojan and Lady Trojan teams of the spring were honored at a banquet at the Stone Creek Grill on Thursday night. Several of the players earned team honors for their fine seasons.

In baseball, head coach Matt Trujillo mentioned early that the season was not marked with success in the win/loss columns but by the way that the players improved each day.

“We had guys coming out every day looking to get better, always being ready to work to improve. That was what our season was about this year,” Trujillo said.

“The guys did a good job and with the new stadium at CBC and the new practice field on campus, we are all really excited about the future of the Trojan baseball program.”

Only one award was presented in baseball. The Hustle Award was shared by two Trojans who personified the word. Jarrett Cano and senior catcher Daniel Amador were presented the joint honor by coach Trujillo.

In softball, the varsity squad had a tough district season, but their record of 1-11 in district did not do justice to the hard work that the girls put into the season, according to head coach Alan Burkett. Overall, the Lady Trojans finished the year with a 12-24 record.

The Top Batter award went to two players chosen by the coaching staff. Freshman first baseman Roslyn Holland led the team with a .398 average on the year, and junior catcher Rebekah Mendoza followed closely with a season long .369 average at the plate.

Third baseman senior Eddika Ortega was presented with the Golden Glove award for her great defensive skills at the hot corner.

The Heart Award went to junior shortstop Brianna Gobel, the first on the field, the first at practice and one of the players who could always be counted on to battle until the game’s final out.

The Lady Trojan Most Valuable Player award went to pitcher, second baseman and leadoff hitter Rebecca De Los Santos. She hit over .340 and pitched the majority of innings for the season and always came up big on defense for the Beeville girls.

A special award from the team went to parents Edward and Lupita Ortega for their devotion and dedication to the team. The Ortegas volunteered numerous hours on and off the field to help with the Booster Club concessions. Mr. Ortega took over the scorekeeping and announcing duties for the Lady Trojans.
