PALACIOS – The Goliad Tigers defeated the Edna Cowboys 32-7 in the semifinals of Saturday's Texas Sharks Division II 7-on-7 football state-qualifying tournament to earn a berth in the state tournament July 10 and 11 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.

Goliad and Cuero, which defeated the Tigers 40-21 in pool play, each reached the final but agreed to not play because both teams had already qualified for the state tournament. Cuero beat Needville 33-7 in the other semifinal.

Goliad advanced to the semifinals after compiling a 2-1 record in pool play. The Tigers opened the tournament with a 28-27 win over the Yoakum Bulldogs before qualifying for the semifinals with a 34-12 victory over the Wharton Tigers.

This was the first season Goliad competed in the state-qualifying tournament.
