GOLIAD – The financial consultant city council approved at its June 3 meeting has turned down the offer.

City council voted 3-2, with Mayor Anna Lopez Machacek casting the deciding vote, to replace financial consultant Bebe Henneke with Diana Cheek of Yorktown.

Machacek recommended Cheek. Councilwoman Cheryl Worley made the motion to replace Henneke and it was seconded by councilwoman Liz Holsey. Worley and Holsey voted for hiring Cheek, while councilmen Buddy Zavesky and Lionel Garcia voted against the motion. Councilman Joey Thompson abstained, forcing Machacek to cast the deciding vote.

In a letter to Machacek, Cheek wrote, "As discussed in our telephone conversation Thursday evening, June 12, 2014, I am notifying you and the City Council that I will not be able to work for the City of Goliad, as financial consultant or in any related capacities. This decision was made for personal reasons."

City council went against the advice of City Administrator Larry Zermeno, who applauded Henneke for her work in getting the city's financial records up to date.
