But, all but three failed to meet the state average.
Beeville Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Sue Thomas released the scores to BISD trustees at Tuesday evening’s regular meeting.
Five scores were lower than those in 2013, including 5th-grade reading, 7th-grade math and 8th-grade reading, science and social studies.
Because of changes in the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) testing by the Texas Legislature, comparison in three categories are not possible with last year’s tests.
“Our students are much better than our scores,” Dr. Thomas told the full board.
The largest improvement was in 7th-grade writing, which showed a 33 percent increase over last year. The largest loss was in 7th-grade math, down 12 percent from last year.
Three categories — 4th-grade writing, 7th-grade writing and 8th-grade reading — either met or surpassed the state scores; five category scores either met or surpassed the region scores.
The highest score was 8th-grade reading, at 86 percent; the lowest, also in the 8th grade, was 38 percent in social studies — a category that returned lower scores at both the state and regional level.
“We are improving and will continue to improve our scores at a steady pace,” Thomas said, “because they are the measure by which the state measures our progress.”
Also on Tuesday, a Houston mother questioned the validity of STAAR testing by refusing to allow her nine-year-old son to take the STAAR test.
Claudia DeLeon Geisler told a Houston television reporter that she thinks the test dehumanizes students, because it makes them “an object for the school district and teachers to get a score out of.”
HISD is not allowing her son, Diego Geisler—who makes good grades—to attend fourth grade next year until he attends summer school and takes the test.
While no such incident has occurred at BISD, Thomas has repeatedly stated that “one test is not a measure of how well a student or a district is doing.”
